Toloa Tertiary Scholarships

Established in 2015, the Toloa Tertiary Scholarships are funded by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples to support Pacific students to pursue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. 

What is the goal?

The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage Pacific students to pursue studies in STEM subjects at tertiary level and increase the numbers of pacific people employed into STEM careers. 

What do the Toloa Tertiary Scholarships cover?

Capped at $9000 per year, the scholarship covers tuition and compulsory fees which are course fees, Student Services Fee and Building Levy. Compulsory fees are course fees, plus Student Services Fee and Building Levy. 

Are applications open to tertiary students? 

Applications for the 2019 Scholarships open in September 2018. In 2018, the Government introduced fees FREE for first year tertiary students in 2018. With the first year fees covered by the Government, applications for the Toloa Tertiary Scholarships are open to tertiary students in their second, third and / or fourth year of study.

Applications are also open to STEM postgraduates in their first and or sequential years.

What do I need to be eligible to apply?

New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Pacific descent can apply. Check out our eligibility  for more details. 

Why does the Ministry for Pacific Peoples offer these Scholarships?

These scholarships are designed to motivate, celebrate and inspire Pacific people to study STEM courses and enter a career in STEM.

Can I apply if I intend to enrol in a health related course or qualification?

No this is for pure sciences. However the Ministry of Health offer the Aniva Scholarships for those wishing to enrol in health related course or qualification. Visit the Ministry of Health website for details.
