FAQs

What is the Toloa Community Fund?

The Toloa Community Fund is an initiative that is funded by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples. The purpose of the fund is to encourage and support organisations/community groups to promote and deliver STEM activities to young Pacific people, through engaging key Pacific influencer groups including parents, families and community leaders.

What is STEM?

STEM is an internationally recognised acronym that refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas of learning.

Why focus on STEM?

Innovation is essential for a successful and productive economy. To help achieve this, we need more skilled people with creative and problem solving skills, and more people studying STEM subjects.

Many STEM occupations have high projections for future growth in New Zealand. These include information technology professionals, engineers, technicians, and natural and physical science professionals.

Why are there only two funding options available?

By capping the funding to $5,000 and $20,000, this enables two specific levels for applicants to submit proposals for:

Level 1: Initiatives up to the value of $5,000 which will be for groups to deliver small-scale community activities as an introduction to STEM. This might include one-off activities such as an event, expo and/or workshop.

Level 2: Initiatives up to the value of $20,000 which will be for groups with existing small-scale initiatives to scale up their activities to deliver STEM initiatives to a greater number of people over a period of time (up to six to eight weeks). This will enable participants to develop a more in-depth and greater understanding of STEM.
