Emeline Latu (pictured) believes in the power of education.

The proud 21-year-old Tongan woman sees it as her mission to help educate those around her, while also sharing the importance of Tongan culture and values.

At the recent 2022 Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards (PMPYA), Emeline came away with the Ministry of Education sponsored Teaching and Education Award, which recognises a young Pacific person who is passionate about teaching and has Pacific language skills and cultural competencies.

Currently studying towards a Bachelor of Arts majoring in education at the Auckland University of Technology, the Otahuhu-based student impressed judges with her goal to create change within the education system.

“I want to work with primary school age students so I may help them learn more about the value of their cultural heritages at an early age,” Emeline says.

“I would also like to work for the Ministry of Education one day in the hopes of gradually changing the system to better accommodate New Zealand's underprivileged pupils, who are so often Māori and Pacific children.”

As a Pacific student, Emeline says she frequently desired the support she wants to provide for future generations.

“My desire to serve Pacific is undoubtedly fuelled by my family.

“Working in the Pacific space means so much to my family and I, as well as to my ancestors and my community back home in Tongatapu.

“I adore being surrounded by individuals who have the same cultural values and viewpoints as me.”

Looking ahead, Emeline has visions of increasing the number of Pacific people who pursue higher education.

“I hope as they move from high school to post-secondary school education, young Pacific students would use their Pasifika culture and values to guide them through life.”

The Teaching and Education award is a first step towards accomplishing her objectives, she adds.

“I have been introduced to other organisations and sponsors who share the same dream as mine, thanks to this award.

“Being sponsored by the Ministry is a huge benefit in and of itself, and this honour means the world to me.”
