Pacific participants of diverse ethnic backgrounds and governance levels were presented with the opportunity to learn about the journeys of experienced Pacific directors who have been successfully appointed to State Sector Boards at a recent governance networking event in Christchurch.

Pictured are L-R, Jill Steffert (IoD), Geordie Hooft (IoD), Tofilau Iris Webster (MPP), Josiah Tualamali’i, Mele Wendt, Caren Rangi, Dr Kiki Maoate and Michael Fraser (IoD) at the recent Introduction to governance for Pacific people networking event.

The Institute of Directors (IoD) and Ministry for Pacific Peoples hosted An introduction to governance for Pacific people.

Approximately 50 people heard keynote speaker Caren Rangi share her extensive governance experience.

She then facilitated a panel discussion with Education Leader Mele Wendt, Paediatric Surgeon and Urologist Dr Kiki Maoate and Director on the Le Va Board Josiah Tualamali’i.

The following day, MPP supported an introductory governance course, Good Governance with a Pacific Lens, facilitated by Caren and Mele.

The one-day free course for people of Pacific descent, covered the fundamentals of good governance and focused on the practice of governance.

It proved practical and useful for new and emerging governors/board members and enabled participants to have a better understanding of the general skills, attributes and experiences needed for governance and to be more confident in utilising their strengths and experiences to contribute effectively, in the boardroom.

Both events have enabled MPP to make new connections with a focus of growing its pool of candidates for Public Sector Boards and Committees.

The Ministry and IoD are facilitating another Introduction to governance for Pacific peoples networking event on June 8, 5:30pm-8pm, at KPMG, Wellington.

Caren and Mele will be speaking once again, along with Consultant Sai Lealea and Governor at Reserve Bank of New Zealand Adrian Orr.

Meanwhile, on June 10, the Women in Governance Awards Gala Dinner will take place at Hilton Auckland.

Award winners in all categories will be announced at the event, hosted by Governance New Zealand.
