Samoan Language Week
Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa: Sāmoan Language Week runs from Sunday May 28 until Saturday 3 June 2017.
Ministry for Pacific Peoples is proud to support Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa – Sāmoan Language week starting 28th of May through to 3rd of June 2017.
The Sāmoan language is the third most commonly spoken language in New Zealand, immediately following English and Te reo Maori.
This year’s theme is:
"Ma’au i lou ofaga. Maua’a lou fa’asinomaga” – “Keep your identity alive to thrive”
E maota tau’ave, mamalu tau’ave Samoa - The essence of being Samoan accompanies Samoans.
E le tauilo tama a Tausala - Great mothers rear great human beings.
E iloa ‘oe i lau gagana - Your language speaks volume of you
A malu i fale, e malu i fafo - Respect yourself and others will too
O le gagana e la’ei ai le aganu’u - Language characterises the essence of culture
The official language resource cards with our seven Pacific languages - including Sāmoan, are available for download here.
Speak, Use, Teach and Learn Gagana Sāmoa (Sāmoan Language) at home, work, everywhere
The week is a chance for all New Zealanders to celebrate the Sāmoan culture and language. Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa is also a time to focus on encouraging more people to use and learn Gagana Sāmoa. Sixty per cent of Sāmoans in New Zealand speak Gagana Samoa but we want that number to grow.
The Ministry provides organisational and financial support to Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa and works closely with Sāmoan communities and partners to make it happen.
We encourage you to find an event happening for Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa in your area take part in the vibrant celebrations.
